About the Islamic Center of Kitsap County
In 1991 the known population of Muslims in Kitsap County was 10 people (3
families).
Now in 2008 the Islamic population has grown to more then 150.
For the last 17 years, Kitsap Community members have been traveling weekly to
either
the Tacoma Islamic Center or the Northgate Mosque in Seattle for weekly
congregational prayers, holidays, or other special Islamic events.
This has become infeasible for many local Muslim families, and is no longer
practical.
There have been many individuals and families that have come and departed this
area
due to there being no strong community presence or regular place to worship and
gathering place for Islamic services and special events.
The local Muslim community is now working very hard to establish their own
Mosque
here in Kitsap County. This cannot be done without community support and
assistance.
This Mosque will be the most Northwest Islamic worship center in the United
States.
In addition to Kitsap County Muslim residents, this facility will meet the needs
of
the significant number of believers from all over the Olympic Peninsula. In
addition to the many Muslims now serving in the armed forces located at the
local
military installations.
At present there are Muslim families now living on the other side of the Hood
Canal
floating bridge making the weekly
(or more) commute
to the Tacoma Islamic Center. Some as much as 65 miles each
way.
“Insha’allah” (God willing) we will soon be able to accomplish this long sought
after goal.
The local Muslim community is a vibrant and devout religious organization.
Having a
local place of worship will prove to be of tremendous value to all of the Kitsap
County and Olympic Peninsula area.
